Leadership, to inform them about issues, excite

Leadership, according to Keith Davis, is the ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. It is the human factor which binds a group together and motivates it towards goals.  There are several definitions of what a leader should be from several prominent people.  Gilbert Amelio states a leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas, to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. Similarly Charles Henry maintains that a leader shapes and shares a vision which gives point to the work of others. From all the definitions I conclude that a leader is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a set goal. In order to be able to do this a leader must use various tools available as a guide. These include communication, openness, listening and exemplary behavior.  The ultimate goal therefore of leadership is to realize that intended or real change meets peoples enduring needs. Meriam Webster Dictionary on the other hand defines communication as “a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior”. Communication is said to be a fundamental tool of a good leader. A good leader must be able to communicate with his peers clearly in order to inform them about issues, excite them, motivate them and build trust. A good leader must be able to share ideas, to create an effective workplace. He must also be ready to receive feedback, be it good or bad. Communications is considered a two way tool, so giving and listen. So for communication is important for effective leadership. It is essential for a leader to possess good communication skills whether in speaking casually with subordinate or a formal speech. Each and every word a leader speaks must carry meaning. They must have the right postures, facial expressions and use of hand gestures to carry their message across properly.A leader must be able to communicate clearly and directly. If you are unable to get your message out clearly and act on it then the message itself fails to exist. As a student leader, I would want to send my message out clearly and ensure that I act on them instead of making vague promises and unachievable goals as is sometimes the case during school elections. Besides, as a leader, I would also like to serve or become a servant to my peers in ensuring that I do not lord over them but rather work in their interest. I will also operate an open door policy where students can easily walk up to me with their challenges.Having talked about effective communication I am going to use this effectively during my tenure. As canteen prefect, I believe there are various ways to utilize communication. These are some of the things I would love to do. Rules from the Canteen Committee would be communicated clearly to all students. In addition, to suggestion boxes in the canteen, there would be an open forum sessions once a term between the vendors and students so that the students can express any views, observations and suggestion to help improve upon the canteen.  Furthermore, the open forum would be accompanied with feedback from meetings with students to school administration. This will allow flow of communication between students and administration on canteen matters. This is one observation I made when school administration failed to communicate the introduction of ATS to the canteen. In my tenure I hope that communication between administration and student would be smooth to avoid any misunderstandings. Adolf Hitler with just a few mere words could command an entire army to do his bidding, Martin Luther King Jr. by saying the words ” I have a dream” has been able ti inspire generations including ours. In conclusion, no leader can call himself a good leader is he does not understand what it means to communicate with his peers. I aspire to be like all the great leaders out there who are able to use words to provoke change in several people and not only inspire them but also act on every single item I tell my follow peers during campaigning.
