There are many benefits of learning to play the piano. Piano is not only a beautiful instrument, it also has a neurological impact and physiological impact. Studies have shown that learning to play the piano impacts a persons muscles and improves a person’s health. Science also shows how piano players’ brains’ are actually different from everybody else’s.
Muscle memory is an amazing thing when it comes to learning to play the piano. Muscle memory are memories stored in the brain that are much like frequently enacted tasks for muscles. Muscle memory can is like a pianist secret weapon. It helps correct any mistakes right away, whether it’s technique, poster, or memorization. Muscle memory also uses flow to help learn skills more quickly. Also developing muscle memory means being diligent and consistent on a certain skill before it requires less effort and concentration. Muscle memory does not really retain memory in someone’s muscles, but rather the nerves associated with that muscle. When someone repetitively practices a movement, they are changing the way the brain reacts to the movements, resulting in quicker movements. This actually expands brain power! Just like anything done in life, the more someone practices something, the easier it gets. Muscle memory stays with a person for a very long time. In fact, skilled pianist use their motor network less than inexperienced pianist when it comes to complex hand movements. The movements become programmed and thinking about the movements is no longer required. Because muscle memory has already been formed, when it comes to experienced pianist, they play without thinking, which actually frees up time to focus on other developing skills. The process of building muscle memory is built through strict repetition,  which is actually the learning process. Until something  is played  consistently correctly, only then it is truly practicing. To build muscle memory something must be continuously practiced, meaning that muscle memory is only developed once someone is in the practicing phase. Building muscle memory is also something to be very careful with. If someone does’t bother to correct their mistakes during the learning phase, wrong muscle memories will soon form. This will be extremely difficult to correct later on. In the long run, it is easier to learn something right the first time than having to go back and correct it later on once the muscle memory is already built. Someone shouldn’t be practicing something until they can get it right completely, or not be able to play it wrong.
Learning and playing the piano has many health benefits. Since piano required both hands to be doing different thing, gradually the art of split concentration becomes an essential part. This also helps coordination with eyes and hands while playing. It has also been found that human growth hormones have an increased growth in children  who play the piano. These growth hormones keep a person energetic and prevent issues like body aches and pains in old age. Studies showed that students who too piano lessons had increases levels of human growth hormones than those who don’t play piano.  Additionally, piano playing relieves stress. Music from pianos does not only soothe the soul, but it also acts as a stress buster. Even if someone takes just a few minutes of their day to play the piano, it can lower blood pressure and make a person much more positive. Participating in piano lessons also form better responses to criticism. When young students see their teacher as an expert in the field, it is easier to take constructive criticism. Also, playing in front of just a few people can get rid of a persons stage fright. Learning piano shows improvement in the classroom as well. Those who participate in piano lessons tend to be highly intelligent in the classroom. Research that was done by McGill University in Montreal, Canada found that grade school students who studied piano for 3 years scored higher on test. Next piano playing can also broaden vocabulary. In a 2009 study published in the Journal Psychology in Music, an experiment that students that had music in their academic curriculum had better vocabulary and verbal sequencing the those who were not involved with music. Playing piano requires a person to be creative every time they play. For example, adding dynamics or accents to the music to spice up a piece. Research done by Vanderbit University psychologist found that musicians use a creative technique known as divergent thinking which requires the use of both sides of the brain. Piano playing also strengthens hand muscles by maintaining the correct hand postures and using proper hand position while playing. This actually makes the arms stronger. Learning the piano is a great way of developing skill in children. There are many more health benefits from playing the piano, but those were ones I found most interesting.
Lastly, piano players’ brains’ are actually different from everybody else’s. Some people never recover from childhood piano lessons. This is because true pianist’s brains are actually different from everybody else’s brains. Playing piano actually increases a persons intelligence levels. It can make a person smarter in specific areas. Particularly, in mathematics, science, engineering, and more. That is why many some parents have their kids participate in piano lessons, in order to help young children develop their intelligence abilities. Piano is the ultimate instrument in terms of learning skill and demand. Hands can play up to 10 notes at a time. Pianist have to develop a totally unique brain capacity in order to manage key options. Since both hands are required to be equally active or pianist to master the piano, they have to overcome the right or left-handness. The depth of the brain’s central sulcus is either deeper on the right or on the left, which determines which hand is dominant. When scientist scan the brains of pianists they found something different. Pianists had a more symmetrical brain central sulcus than everybody else’s. Which means that both hands were almost equally dominant. Event though they were born right or left handed, their brain barley registered it. Because pianist still have a dominant hand, researchers speculated that their equal depth was not natural, but resulted because pianist are able to strengthen their weaker side to match their dominant side. Pianist are able to make their brains into better rounded machines. Most shockingly, scientist found that experienced pianists play, they actually switch off the part of the brain associated with providing stereotypical responses, so when they play pianists use their own unique voice and not the voices of others. Also, when pianists improvise, the language portion of the brain remains active. Playing music is fundamentally an act of communication. But the difference is pianist’s form of communication is through notes not words. Dr. Charles Limb’s studies showed that when pianists play a solo, their brain responds as if they were responding in a conversation. Also. learning to play the piano teaches the brain to work on overdrive. The brain has to keep the time, follow the pitch, form the chords all while maintaining the good posture and playing individual parts with the right and left hand. Every time someone plays the piano, it is a huge workout for the brain because it exercises someone’s creative, visual, auditory, and emotional motor functions. So pianists have unique brains from those who do not play piano. The are masters of creative and purposeful  communication because of playing the piano. They become natural multi-taskers of the musical world.
In all, piano playing is not only a fun and relaxing hobby, it has benefits on the muscles, health, and the brain. Piano is a beautiful sounding instrument and learning the piano will also impact someone with neurological and physiological benefits. I decided to take piano class because I love music. I was in middle school band all 3 years I was at the school, but I did not want to continue to play in band in high school. I wanted to continue learning and playing music because it is something that I love to do.I have always loved listening to piano and it always seemed like a fascinating instrument to learn too. I also watched many tutorials on the internet on how to play the piano. I decided to take the class because I would be able to learn the correct techniques and continue to do learn and play music. My favorite piano piece is Canon by Pachelbel because my mom used to always play it for me when I was little. Every time I hear the song Canon it makes me feel happy like I did when I was little. Canon is a piece I want to be able to do play by the end of piano. I know it is a challenging song especially since I am only in Piano 1 but it is something that I want to work towards. Learning all the benefits of the piano has made me change the way I feel towards learning to play the piano. I want to someday become a good enough pianist to play pieces like Canon.
