Throughout history people have constantly killed
others for minimum reason to no reason. The genocide in Bosnia, also known as
Bosnia-Herzegovina, started in 1992 and lasted until 1995 and it involved the
massacre of the Bosnians by the Serbs. Bosnia is made up of three ethnicities,
the Bosnians made up of forty-five percent of the population, the Serbs made up
of thirty-three percent of the population, and the Croatians were the remaining
six percent. In April 1992 the Serbs were
anxious for control over Bosnia. At
the time Yugoslavia was a country which was brought together by Serbs, Croatians,
Bosnians, Albanians and Slovenes. Yugoslavia was then falling apart and by 1992
Bosnia declared independence. The Serbs then began a military campaign to remove
the Bosnians from the area.  This tragedy
was one of the worst acts of genocide since the Nazi regime’s destruction of
the European Jews during World War II. To understand this terrible crisis, take
a look back at the situation before this conflict.

The genocide had started in the year of 1992 and
Bosnia’s situation beforehand was with no independence of its own. Bosnia was
apart of a Turkish empire until 1878 and then the First World War had broken
out. After the war Bosnia was united with Yugoslavia which was ruled by most
Serbs. Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito had died in 1980 and the growing
nationalism had threaten to split up the union.
The leader of Bosnia’s government was Alija Izetbegovic and he called
for independence for Bosnia from Yugoslavia in 1992. The Croatians were all in
favor in gaining independence. In April the Serbs were set out to Bosnian
territory, removing Bosnians by surrounding the capital city which was
Sarajevo. The civil war, also known as the Bosnian War had begun in 1992-1995. Bosnia
showed efforts in giving peace to the war but when failed in 1993 another war
broke out. This time it was against the Bosnians and the Croatians. After a
year the United States creates a Bosnian-Croatians federation. On November 21,
1995 the Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic, the Serbian president Lobodan
Milosevic, and the Croatian president Franjo Tudjmanall agreed to the Daytona peace
deal. This war resulted in over 100,000 deaths which consisted of mostly
Bosnians.

Today, 20 years later Bosnia still is recovering from
the horrifying events. The war succeeded in separating the country’s three main
people, Serbians, Croatians, and Bosnians. Bosnia has its independence but is
receiving guidance from all three presidents who are representing the Bosnians,
Croatians, and Serbians. There have been signs of protests coming from the
Bosnian youth demanding a better life and a better economic system. About two
years ago in 2016 the Serbian leader, Radovan Karadzic was convicted for his
role in the genocide. Ratko Mladic, former commander for the Bosnians and Serbs
was sentenced life of imprisonment for his actions during the genocide and for
his crimes against humanity during the time period 1992-1995. Also during
Bosnia’s economic recovery they didn’t take to heart creating a new foundation
for economic growth. Schools have been segregated and children now are growing
up more isolated from the other ethnic groups. Bosnia-Herzegovina
now have at least 50 schools in which students are not only physically
separated from one another, but study from separate textbooks regarding
history, literature, and geography. Also students are taught in separate
languages. The U.S is trying to help get Bosnia back on track starting with
their schools. Students in Bosnia can apply for programs in the U.S to start up
there education right here in the United States. Not to overlook that Bosnia
has come a long way in its environment. There are parts of Bosnia that are
gorgeous and appealing to eye. Tourism in Bosnia has never been bigger then it
is today.

Technology, now that’s was a big problem in Bosnia a
few years back. Technology hasn’t been influenced in the country of Bosnia but
now there has been a new foundation which gives students access to technology.
This foundation is called “The Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation”, it
provides students a chance at succeeding in education who are studying any
field regarding engineering, manufacturing, computer sciences. There are also
life changing scholarships which students in Bosnia can apply for. The Dayton
Peace Agreement established during the war in 1995 has now created multiple
layers of government. Doing business in Bosnia is more difficult than many
other countries because of the underdeveloped institutions and Bosnia has one
of the weakest judiciary. The recent general election was in 2014 and due
to all of these low standards and complications in the government of Bosnia there
will be another election sometime in 2018. Also in order for Bosnia to have a
greater economic system they must create a new foundation strong enough so that
there could be growth in their economics. The civil war of 1992-1995 has generated
an extreme difference between the rich and the poor. People who have access to
goods needed to survive can sell them at ridiculously high amounts of money.
Bosnia hasn’t come a long way since the civil war but are planning to gain some
sort of wealth or simply just a better life.

Briefly concluding, Bosnia has been through many more
terrifying events then other countries. Bosnians were at war with the Croatians
and the Serbs wanted control over Bosnia and did whatever they could to stop
Bosnia from gaining independence. The Daytona Peace deal had a huge influence
on Bosnians, Serbians, and Croatians. Bosnia’s economic system and political
environment has gotten worst over the years. Also schools have been segregated
and students were not given the proper education that they receive today from
the “The Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation”. The United States have
helped Bosnia get better education, jobs, etc. Bosnia was and still is
struggling to survive but have been given hope for a better life. Bosnia may
not have many things, but independence is one thing they do have.
